| September 1, 2010 FORT ST. JAMES – The College of New Caledonia will receive $20,000 from the Province to assist them in combating racism and hate in their communities. “Smaller communities often lack the resources to provide this type of programming, even though it may be helpful,” says Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad. “Fort St. James will continue to prosper due to the growing opportunities in the North and this funding will help to build an inclusive and understanding community.” Four organizations across B.C. will receive $20,000 through the EmbraceBC’s Organizing Against Racism and Hate program including:
The selected organizations will go through a three-year process that begins with increasing community awareness around the issues of racism and hate. They will then engage the community in discussion on what can be done about these issues, and the end product will be a Community Action and Sustainability Plan to be adopted by the local region or district. Several communities across the province have already participated in this program and developed materials including community protocols with help from the Province of British Columbia. EmbraceBC works to inspire residents, community members and sector leaders to welcome, accept and embrace difference within their communities.
